The Law of Correspondence: What It Really Means
If you have read the Kybalion or heard about the seven Hermetic laws, you have probably met the Law of Correspondence. It is often summed up as as above, so below, but that phrase can become a slogan. The 1908 text and later Hermetic writers use it more carefully.
This article looks at what the Kybalion actually says, how The Message of the Stars applies a Law of Correspondences, and how you can use the idea in everyday reflection without turning it into a promise about outcomes.
What the Kybalion actually says
The Kybalion presents seven principles. Correspondence is one of them, and it is not a spell or a technique. It is a way of reading pattern. The text asks you to test the idea on yourself: The Kybalion says, "apply the Law of Correspondence to yourself". That is a modest instruction. Look at your own mind, your moods, your habits, and see whether the same pattern appears in your outer life.
The Kybalion also uses correspondence to discuss an Inner Nature and how things might be postulated. It speaks of an Inner Nature and things that might be postulated "according to the Law of Correspondence". But it immediately warns that The All is not bound by internal or external influence. In other words, correspondence is a principle of relationship, not a machine that forces the universe to obey your thoughts.
The Hermetic root: analogy, not magic
Hermetic writing is full of analogy. The visible world is treated as a mirror of invisible order. Correspondence is the name for that mirroring. It does not say that a small thing is identical to a large thing. It says that a pattern can repeat across levels: a person, a household, a city, a cosmos.
This is why the Kybalion can move from the mind of an individual to the Mind of The All. The same word, mind, is used at different scales. For a modern reader, the useful question is not whether the cosmos literally has a mind like yours. The useful question is: where am I seeing the same pattern again? That is reflection, not proof.

See the INFLUANCE books & guides →How The Message of the Stars uses correspondence
The Message of the Stars contains a chapter headed "THE LAW OF CORRESPONDENCES". It maps zodiac signs to parts of the body and planets to traditional effects. Aries is linked with the head, Taurus with the neck and throat, Gemini with the arms, hands and lungs. This is a historical symbolic system, not medical guidance. It shows how correspondences were used as an index: if you want to think about a theme, you look for its related sign, planet, element or organ.
Read this material as tradition, not as diagnosis. The old texts often mixed astrology, medicine and philosophy. You can appreciate the pattern-making without treating the list as a health claim. For spiritual reflection, the value is in noticing relationships: head and initiative, throat and voice, hands and exchange. Those are poetic links, not clinical ones.
Where correspondence sits among the seven laws
The seven principles in the Kybalion are usually listed as Mentalism, Correspondence, Vibration, Polarity, Rhythm, Cause and Effect, and Gender. Correspondence is the bridge. Mentalism says the universe is mental in nature. Correspondence says that what is true on one level can be traced on another. Vibration says nothing is still. Polarity says opposites meet. Rhythm says things swing. Cause and Effect says there are consequences. Gender says creation needs two poles.
Used alone, correspondence can become vague. Used with the other principles, it becomes practical. If you notice a pattern in your life, ask which polarity is at work. Ask what rhythm is swinging. Ask what cause you are feeding. Correspondence does not replace those questions. It helps you see where to ask them.
Everyday reflection with the Law of Correspondence
You do not need a formal ritual to work with correspondence. A notebook and ten quiet minutes are enough. The aim is not to force an outcome. The aim is to notice what mirrors what.
- Morning check: What is the weather inside me? What is the weather outside me? Write one sentence for each, then look for a shared theme.
- Relationship mirror: When someone irritates you, ask what quality they are showing. Then ask where that quality lives in you, in a different form.
- Home and desk: Look at your room. Is it cluttered, calm, unfinished, crowded? Ask how that outer arrangement corresponds to your inner state.
- Tarot and crystals: Use correspondences as symbolic prompts. A card, colour, element or stone can be a lens for reflection, not a fixed answer.
- Astrology: Treat signs and planets as a language of pattern. A placement can suggest a theme to explore, not a verdict on your life.
- Action step: After you notice a correspondence, choose one small action that brings the outer and inner closer together. That might be tidying a shelf, making a call, or writing a boundary.
- If you want to turn these reflections into a daily rhythm, the INFLUANCE books and guides are designed for that. They keep the ideas close to hand without turning them into rigid rules.
Common misunderstandings
Correspondence is often oversimplified. It is not a promise that your inner state will instantly reshape events. It is not positive thinking with a Hermetic label. It is not a way to avoid practical action. It is not a health diagnostic tool, and it is not a substitute for professional advice.
- It is not literal equivalence. A small pattern may echo a large one, but it is not the same thing.
- It is not a command. You cannot use correspondence to control other people or force the world to comply.
- It is not only for mystics. Anyone who reflects on patterns can use it.
- It is not a replacement for the other six principles. It works best in company.
A simple daily practice
Try this for a week. In the morning, read one line from the Kybalion or another Hermetic text. In the evening, write three lines. First: what outer event stood out today? Second: what inner state did it echo? Third: what is one small adjustment for tomorrow?
At the end of the week, read your notes. You may see a repeating theme. That theme is your correspondence. You do not need to prove it to anyone. You only need to let it teach you something about how you move through the world.
Questions people ask
Is the Law of Correspondence the same as as above, so below?
The phrase as above, so below is a traditional Hermetic summary of correspondence. The Kybalion treats it as a principle of pattern and relationship, not a promise that every inner thought will appear in outer events. It is a lens for reflection, not a mechanical law of results.
Do I need to believe in astrology to use correspondence?
No. The Message of the Stars uses astrological correspondences, but you can use the principle with tarot, crystals, nature, or ordinary life. The point is to notice patterns across levels, not to accept a particular system as fact.
How is correspondence different from manifestation?
Manifestation often focuses on attracting a specific outcome. Correspondence is more about seeing how inner and outer patterns mirror each other. It may lead to action, but it does not promise that thought alone will change circumstances.
